Funeral services for the late Mrs. Adell Downing will be held on Saturday, February 17, 2018 at St. John Baptist Church, Bamberg, SC at 3:00 pm.  Interment services will follow immediately at Bamberg Memory Gardens, Bamberg, South Carolina.  Viewing for the public will be held on Friday from 12:00 noon -8:00 pm at the funeral home.



A Time to be Born: Adell was born on February 6, 1934 to the late Lige Grant and Eve Matheny-Grant in Bamberg, South Carolina.

A Time to Learn and Serve: Adell was educated in the public schools of Bamberg, South Carolina. At an early age, she joined St. John Baptist Church, where she served on the Usher Board for many years. She served faithfully until her health failed, but she continued to be a dedicated member of the church.

A Time Together: Adell met and married James Downing, Sr. From this union, they were blessed with eight children. Adell was a devoted wife and loving mother.

A Time to Rest: On Saturday, February 10, 2018, God sent His angel to bring Adell home to her final resting place.

A Time to Remember: Adell enjoyed spending time with her family. She wanted all her family to be around her. She enjoyed talking on the phone and sitting in her favorite chair, looking out the door.

Final Chapter: Adell was preceded in death by her husband, the late James Downing, Sr. and two daughters, Richardean Entzminger and Janice Downing Davis.

She leaves to cherish her memories—four daughters: Lillie M. Dowling and Emma R. Downing of Brooklyn, New York, Brenda G. Downing and Sylvia "Ann" Downing of Bamberg, South Carolina; two sons: Retired Army Sergeant 1st Class, James Downing, Jr. of Fayetteville, North Carolina and Cornell Downing of Bamberg, South Carolina; one brother, Rayfield (Fannie) Grant of Jamaica, New York; three sisters-in-law: Thelma Downing of Columbia, South Carolina, Alice Downing of Norristown, Pennsylvania and Barbara Downing of Bronx, New York; one son-in-law, Jake Davis, Sr. of Bamberg, South Carolina; a very devoted grandson, Jamell Kirkland and granddaughter, Taqulla Downing of Bamberg, South Carolina; a special nephew, Ronald Meeks of Bamberg, South Carolina; 14 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, and a host of friends and family, who loved her dearly.
