Funeral services for the late Mr. Benjamin Haynes will be held on Friday, November 30, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church (Midway Community), Bamberg, SC. Interment services will follow immediately at Crestlawn Memorial Cemetery, Orangeburg, South Carolina. Viewing for the public will be held on Thursday between the hours of 4:00-6:00 pm at the funeral home. Benjamin Alexander Haynes, Jr., was born on July 1, 1934 in Charleston, South Carolina to the late Benjamin Alexander Haynes, Sr. and Mary Eugenia Smoak- Haynes. He departed this life on November 22, 2012 at Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina. Ben "Benny" as he was often called, was educated in the public school system in Charleston, South Carolina. He later joined the US Air Force in 1951, served during the Korean Conflict and was honorably discharged in 1954. Ben and Alice A. Kearse were joined in holy matrimony in September 1954 in Bamberg, South Carolina. They later moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where they remained until both of them retired and moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 2006. This union was blessed with one child, Anthony "Tony" Irvin Hayes in 1956, who preceded his father in death in March 2008. While residing in Philadelphia, Ben attended the Philadelphia Community College and the Entrepreneurial Development Training Center at Temple University. He completed the "Essentials of Business Ownership" on June 3, 1976. Ben Worked for many years at the Marriott Motor Hotel, in Philadelphia in the main dining room as a team captain, where he learned his expertise skills in fine dining. Ben retired from the Tropicana Resort Hotel in Atlantic City, New Jersey as a dining room host in July 1996. After retirement and relocating to South Carolina, he joined Mt. Zion United Methodist Church where he became very active, and served as an usher, and initiated the food service ministry. He also worked very hard as a Scout Master with Troop # 24 in Bamberg, South Carolina. He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Alice Kearse- Haynes of Columbia, SC; one sister, Lovie Haynes Bryant-Singleton of Charleston, SC; one brother, Frederick I. (Robin) Haynes of Philadelphia, PA; one granddaughter, Rashida Hawkins of Philadelphia, PA; one grandson, Anthony Nagee Ford of Bamberg, SC; one daughter-in-law, Robin F. Haynes of Bamberg, SC; one sister-in-law, Virginia Kearse-Bell of Philadelphia, PA; two aunts, Mrs. Thadenia S. Johnson (103 years young) of Fresno, California and Mrs. Malvenia S. Greene (101 years young) of Queens, New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
