Carrie Mae English, daughter of the late Leroy and Mary Williams English was born on May 16, 1943 in Bamberg County. She entered into eternal rest on January 25, 2014 after an extended illness. Ms. English joined Zion Hill Methodist Church at an early age. She then moved to Miami, Florida where she joined Friendship Baptist Church and served faithfully as an usher. Upon relocating back to Denmark, she joined Faith Ministries. Ms. English attended Voorhees High School and was an alumnae of both Denmark Technical College and Voorhees College. She was a diamond life member of the Denmark Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She always expressed her love and passion toward this organization. Ms. English was employed by Denmark Technical College and most recently Voorhees College until her untimely illness. "Ms. E", as she was affectionately known by all of her students, demonstrated "tough love" while also nurturing and mentoring them as their dorm director. During the holidays, she would bring many of her students home with her and treat them like family. She had a special place in her heart for her students and her beloved "Battle Hall". She was loved by all of her family, and she will be truly missed for her famous potato and coconut pies. She had a way with words, but she had a good heart and would do anything to help if she could. Ms. English is preceded in death by four sisters: Ida Covington, Christine Moody, Artha M. Smith, and Mary E. Butler, and one brother, William English. Ms. English is survived by her loving daughter, Yulonda Green of Orangeburg, SC; one grandson, Julius Lockhart of Orangeburg, SC; special nieces and nephews reared in the home: Wendy Tyler, Martha (Sanford) Pickens, Alicia (James) Shuler, all of Denmark, SC; Albert (Theresa) Butler of Columbia, SC, and Terence Hinton of Denmark, SC; a special niece/caretaker, Brenda Harris of the home; one brother, Charles (Retha) English of Cope, SC; two aunts: Margaret English and Doshia M. Kemp of Denmark, SC ; three uncles: Charlie English of Columbia, SC, Arthur Lee English of Charleston, SC, and Nathaniel Parker of Long Island City, New York; one brother -in-law, Hubert Covington of Hartford, CT; her favorite cousin, Cecil W. Johnson of Philadelphia, PA, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other loving relatives and friends.
