Funeral services for the late Mrs. Catherine M. Gordon will be held at 1:00 pm on Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Orangeburg. Interment services will follow immediately at Belleville Memorial Gardens, Orangeburg. Catherine M. Gordon, the wife of Robert C. Gordon, passed away on June 8, 2014 after an extended illness. The eldest of five children, Catherine was born in Greeleyville, SC and was the daughter of the late Edward Matthews and Lila McClary Matthews. She was raised by her aunt and uncle, the late Helen and Burley Joe. Catherine graduated from C.E. Murray High School, Greeleyville, SC, and began her undergraduate studies at South Carolina State College where she earned a BS degree in mathematics in 1965 and M.Ed. in 1973. She began her teaching career at Cades High School, Cades, SC, for several years until she was united in marriage and joined her husband in Washington, DC. She accompanied her husband to Fort Sill, OK where he served in the US Army. After he discharged from the Army, they moved to Orangeburg and she joined the faculty at Felton Laboratory School and later Orangeburg-Wilkinson High School and Holy Trinity Catholic School. She was an advocate for education which was evident by her commitment to helping those students that needed tutoring in math. Catherine joined Holy Trinity Catholic Church in 1972 upon moving to Orangeburg. She served her church in many capacities throughout the years. She was a member of the first organized bereavement committee, the Women's Guild, a financial officer for the Building Fund Capital Campaign, and taught the high school religious education class. She enjoyed attending her weekly Sunday to Sunday Bible study and also helped with the Newman Club. Active in the community, Catherine was a member of the Sunlight Club, National Federation of Women's Club, Auxiliary to the Palmetto Medical, Dental, and Pharmaceutical Association, Church Women United, South Carolina State University Alumni Association, The Links, Inc., Pacesetters Social Club, Palerdale Civic Association and the Alpha Wives Club. While she was a volunteer for Cooperative Church Ministries of Orangeburg and the Orangeburg County Development Commission, she volunteered wherever she was needed. Catherine previously served on the Low Country Girl Scouts Board of Directors and was a former member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc. In May 2006, the Orangeburg County Community of Character committee recognized Catherine "for exemplifying caring in her day-to-day life." Catherine enjoyed playing bridge and was a member of the Thirteen Hearts and As You Like It bridge clubs. She was very good at growing flowers as well as a great seamstress and wonderful cook. In addition to her father, aunt and uncle, Catherine was preceded in death by her sister Genevieve Matthews and brother Edward Matthews, Jr. She is survived by her husband of forty six years Robert C. Gordon of the home, her mother Lila Matthews of St. Stephens, SC, daughters Donna (Greg) Green of Fredericksburg, VA, Audrey (Northan) Golden of Orangeburg and Helen (Brian) Gary of Montgomery, AL; sisters Margie Giles of Lane, SC and Glinda (Frank) Tucker of Columbia, SC; grandchildren David, Joseph, Alexis and Lila Green of Fredericksburg, VA, Robert and Matthew Golden of Orangeburg, and Claire and Brian (Deuce) Gary of Montgomery, AL; sisters-in-law Vivian Matthews of Salters, SC, Joyce Gordon of Kingstree, SC and Jo Emily (Nathaniel) Knox of Columbia, MD; brother-in-law William G. Gordon of Conyers, GA; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and very dear friends. Viewing for the public will be held on Wednesday from 10:00 am- 4:00 pm at the funeral home. The family will receive friends at Trinity United Methodist Church, Orangeburg from 7:00-8:00 pm, with a memorial service held by the members of The Links, Incorporated at 7:00 pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to Robert and Catherine Gordon Endowed Scholarship Fund at Claflin University or to the South Carolina State University's Foundation.
