Funeral services for Mrs. Eartha L. Haigler will be held on Tuesday, August 2, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Old Sanctuary), Orangeburg, South Carolina. Interment services will be held at Belleville Memorial Gardens, Orangeburg, SC. Rev. Jerome Anderson will officiate. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Mrs. Eartha L. Haigler was born in Calhoun County on December 22nd and departed this life on July 26, 2011 following a brief illness at the Regional Medical Center. She is the widow of the late Deacon Alvin M. Haigler, a longtime Orangeburg resident and faithful member of New Mount Zion Baptist Church. She began her service to the Lord as a child at Emancipation Baptist Church and later joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church. Upon relocating to Washington, DC in 1958, she became affiliated with the New Macedonia Baptist Church before returning to Orangeburg in 1977 and joining New Mount Zion Baptist Church. Mrs. Haigler was educated in the Orangeburg County Public School system, attended South Carolina State University and career wise, worked many years for the United States Federal Government at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Washington, DC. A true example of service, Mrs. Haigler believed in an open heart and open hands of love. Those who knew her well will remember her quiet manner, sweet smile, and hospitable outlook. "And the greatest of these is charity," would best describe how she lived. Her willingness to serve was demonstrated by her tireless participation and active membership on the Deaconess Board, the Pierce Scott Women's Missionary Society, the Senior Choir, and the Busy Bee Club. She also helped to organize the Soup Kitchen and provided her love and support to the Children's Ministry and numerous other church committees. She is survived by two sisters: Ms. Mary W. Bolden and Ms. Louise Chavis of Washington, DC. Her devoted grand niece and nephew, Mrs. Tyra McFadden (her husband Alex D. McFadden) of Irmo, SC and Mr. Brian E. Young of Orangeburg, SC. Her great niece and nephew Miss Alexis McFadden and Mr. Tyler McFadden of Irmo, SC; nieces Ms. Barbara A. Gunter, Ms. Denise Staples and nephews Mr. Robert Young and Mr. William Harris, all of Washington, DC and other relatives.
