Ella Bell Dowling Smith, a respected teacher, devoted wife and mother was born July 23, 1949 in Blackville, South Carolina to the late Span and Mary Alice Dowling. Ella entered eternal rest on the evening of August 11, 2017 at Colleton Medical Center in Walterboro, South Carolina surrounded by her loving family.
Ella was reared in Blackville, South Carolina where she graduated valedictorian from Macedonia High School. Following high school, she earned a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina and a Master's Degree in Education from the University of South Carolina in Columbia, South Carolina. She later married Jimmy Smith in 1978 of Hampton, South Carolina where she lived until her health failed. Ella was an elementary and middle school social studies teacher for 40 years in Hampton and Jasper Counties schools until she retired in 2011.
Ella was a faithful member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Missionary member, youth choir director and choir member. She was also a watch care member of Silver Hill Baptist Church in Hampton, SC where she served as the Sunday School Secretary, church secretary and on the kitchen ministry.
Her parents Mary Alice Dowling and Span Dowling, Sr., and brother, John (Joyce) Wesley Dowling preceded her in death.
Ella is survived by her devoted husband, Jimmy Smith, three children; Rodney Davis (Hampton, SC), Latoya Smith (Hampton, SC) and Michael Smith (Hampton, SC), two grandchildren Joseph and Justice Kelly; four brothers and a host of other relatives and friends.
Viewing for the public will be held on Wednesday from 1:00- 8:00 pm at the Bamberg Chapel.
