Eugene Hughes, Sr. transitioned to be with his heavenly father peacefully on May 14, 2020, at his home. He was the son of the late Lawson Hughes, Sr. and Isabell Salley Hughes of Blackville, SC.

Eugene attended the public schools of Barnwell County and was a 1970 graduate of Macedonia High School where he was elected vice president of his senior class. Eugene was a member of Macedonia High School football team, wearing jersey #70. Upon graduating, he attended Elizabeth State College and South Carolina State College. He began his career with E. I. Dupont at the Savannah River Site in 1975 where he worked as maintenance mechanic, supervisor and support specialist for 30 years. Upon retirement, Eugene enjoyed helping others, watching all kinds of sports and maintaining his yard. He enjoyed spending time with family especially time with his granddaughter.

Eugene joined Macedonia Baptist Church at an early age.

On April 5, 1985, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Teresa Baxter. This union was blessed with three sons.

Eugene is preceded in death by siblings, Lawson Hughes, Jr, Vasmore Hughes, Chester Hughes, Sr., Richard Hughes and Elizabeth Hughes.

Those who will cherish his memories are his loving wife of 35 years; three sons, Eugene Hughes, Jr, (Octavia) of Spartanburg, SC, O'tavis Tyler and Terrence Hughes of Greer, SC; one precious granddaughter, Little Miss Amelia Elise Hughes of Spartanburg, SC; five sisters, Mrs. Lillie Bell Miller and Ms. Clara Mae Hughes of Barnwell, SC, Ms. Eartha Eady, Ms. Elois Hughes and Mary Alice Hughes of Blackville, SC; four brothers, Mr. Paul Hughes of Blackville, SC, Mr. Harold Hughes and Mr. Wilbur Hughes of Augusta, GA and Mr. Robert Hughes of Miami, FL.; mother- in- law, Mrs. Margaret Baxter of Blackville, SC; two sisters- in- law, Mrs. Annie O'Berry (Charles) of Barnwell, SC and Mrs. Anita Hughes of Cleveland, OH; four brothers- in- law, Mr. Johnny Baxter and Mr. Reginald Eady of Blackville, SC, Mr. Bruce Baxter of Barnwell, SC and Mr. Walter Baxter of Fairfax, SC, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
