Services of Death and Resurrection will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2015 at 1:00 pm at Mt. Carmel United Methodist Church in Bamberg, South Carolina. After a courageous and inspirational battle with cancer, Gloria Nadine Tyler entered into Eternal Rest on Wednesday, June 10, 2015 at the Regional Medical Center in Orangeburg, SC. She completed her life as she lived it: on her own terms, surrounded by family, and secure in her unwavering faith and devotion to her Almighty God. The youngest of three daughters born to Nathaniel Tyler and Blanche Graham Tyler, Nadine was born on May 29, 1949 into a community that valued church and family. Her father and mother were devoted Christians and were pillars in the community. Nadine learned at a young age the importance of service, integrity, hard work, and family. Educated in the public schools of Bamberg County, she graduated from Voorhees College with a Bachelor's degree in history and also received a Bachelor's degree in social work from Benedict College. She began her professional career as a social worker at the South Carolina Department of Social Services, where she served for nearly 20 years. During her tenure, Nadine worked to place abused and neglected children in safe and stable homes. Her infectious smile and caring nature assisted her well in this endeavor. For her, helping children and families receive the resources needed to have productive and fulfilling lives was a life-long mission. Nadine also worked in leadership positions within the National Council of Churches' special AmeriCorps initiative, assisting hundreds of young women and men to gain funding for higher education through public service. Later in life, she continued that same sense of mission and purpose as a caregiver to elderly and disabled individuals in Hilton Head, SC. Nadineor "Miss Nadine" as her daughters and older sisters lovingly called herwas a true product of the United Methodist Church. She served her home church, Mt. Carmel with all her grace, gifts, and presence. She was President of the United Methodist Women; she was a certified lay leader; and she was Director of Vacation Bible School. Nadine spearheaded a "Back to School" program ensuring that children in the community had school supplies in the fall and warm coats for the winter. She also directed an annual Spring Celebration providing local children with Easter Baskets. During Advent season, one of her most cherished responsibilities was the "Hanging of the Greens," during which she and her fellow United Methodist Women decorated the church sanctuary with fresh greenery and sumptuous bows and Christmas adornments. Nadine brought an unparalleled level of energy, creativity, and commitment to any pursuit or activity. She strove to make a difference in the lives of her family and her community; but most importantly, she wanted every child that she encountered to fulfill their true potential. As her beloved first cousin, Curtis Tyler said, "My cousin was a humble, loving, family-oriented woman who had a sweet spirit and a love for God just like David in the Old Testament. Intelligent, smart, beautiful, and witty, Nadine had a keen understanding of duty and service. Nadine had a mission to develop and sustain a personal relationship with God. Nadine loved family and she demonstrated it through action. She was a giving person whom acknowledged each season of the year by sending cards to family members to remind them of her love. She had a free spirit, yet a strong commitment to family. She loved the Church powerfully and this love was manifested through her service." Nadine leaves to remember and cherish her memory two daughters: Acacia Tyler Bamberg Salatti of Washington, DC and Misty Dawne Bamberg of Bamberg, SC; a beloved grandson: John Harrison Williams of Bamberg, SC; two sisters: Blanche Deloris Banks and Ethel Ruth Tyler both of Bamberg, SC; three aunts: Emma T. Sheppard of McClellanville, SC, Mary Alice Williams of New York, and Hermean Graham of Bamberg, SC; an ex-husband and dear friend: John Edward Bamberg; three sisters-in-law; three brothers-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends, and neighbors.
