Funeral services for the late Herman L. Meyers will be held on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 11:00 am at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church (Old Church).  Viewing for the public will be held on the day of the service beginning at 9:00 am until the hour of the service.  Interment services will follow immediately at Belleville Memorial Gardens, Orangeburg, South Carolina.


Herman L. Meyers, son of the late Helen Victoria Meyers and the late Benjamin Smalls, was born on January 22, 1944 in Manhattan, New York. He entered his eternal resting place on December 30, 2017 in Orangeburg, South Carolina.

Growing up he spent time in both New York and South Carolina. He graduated from Lincoln High School. It was in New York that he would settle and make a life for himself. He would spend many years working in the New York City Public School System. He would later spend years working with the Nassau County Bord of Elections, however, it was from the Bethpage State Park in New York that he would retire from in 1998 as a groundskeeper.

He would first marry the late Darnell Meyers and, through this union five children were born,  Gabriel, Michael, Chawn, arnold and Joanne Meyers. He later married and spent the rest of his life with Doris Grayson Meyers and through this union he would love and raise one daughter, Ronnesheia Gonzalez.

Herman and Doris retired and moved to Orangeburg, South Carolina and become a member of New Mt. Zion Baptist Church.

Herman was preceded in death by both parents, Helen V. Meyers and Benjamin Smalls; fours sons, Gabriel, Michael, Chawn and Arnold Meyers; three brothers, Bernard R. Smalls, David F. Smalls and Phillip R. Meyers and two sisters, Cynthia H. Smalls and Denise J. Bracker.

He leaves to cherish memories of love, laughter and life his loving wife, Doris J. Meyers; daughters, Joanne Meyers, Ronnesheia Gonzalez and adopted daughter, Latisha Mason; three brothers, Stanley O. Smalls, Darryl M. Smalls and Elliott T. Smalls; five sisters, Twyna Meyers, Thelma S. Rutledge, Doretha F. Smalls, Deborah Smalls and Juanita Smalls; sister-in-law, Mary Donaldson of Montgomery, Alabama and one son-in-law, Juancarlos Gonzalez. He was the grandfather to twelve grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

He also leaves to cherish his memory a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
