Mr. Joseph W. Rickenbacker, son of the late Timothy and Rebecca Johnson Rickenbacker, was born on July 7, 1928 in Bamberg, South Carolina. He entered into eternal rest on March 22, 2017 at his home in Bamberg, South Carolina.

At an early age, he united with Mt. Zion United Methodist Church in Bamberg, South Carolina, where he remained a faithful member throughout his life. He was a member of the United Methodist Men, Trustee Board, Lay Leader and Lay Speaker.

He received his high school diploma from Bamberg-Ehrhardt High School in 1976.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Mary Grant on August 8,1948.

He was a faithful member of the gospel quartet group, "The Sons of Job" for many years. He also hosted a Sunday morning gospel radio show, "Gospel Time Down South," from WWBD Radio Station in Bamberg. In 1950, along with James Washington, George F. Manigo, and Howard Williams, The Silver Trumpets group was formed. This bond has lasted through the years.


He is preceded in death by three grandchildren: Angela, John Jr. and Terrance and a son-in-law, John Johnson, Sr.

He leaves to cherish his memory—his wife, Mary Rickenbacker of Bamberg, SC; three daughters: Ms. Judy Rickenbacker of Chicago, IL, Ms. Jean Johnson of Columbia, SC and Mrs. Gwendolyn (Lawrence) Landy of Orangeburg, SC; two brothers: Mr. Willie Roscoe (Geneva) Rickenbacker of Sarasota, FL and Mr. Charlie Simeon (Beverly) Rickenbacker of Philadelphia, PA; three grandsons: Aaron, Maurice and Jared; eleven great grandchildren along with a host of other loving nieces, nephews, grand nieces, grand nephews, other relatives and friends.
