Services for Mrs. Lerlene Hunt will be held at 11:00 a.m. at Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg, South Carolina. Interment services will be held at Belleville Memorial Gardens. Lerlene Joyce Hilton Hunt was born July 14, 1926 in Manning, South Carolina. She was the eighth of nine children born to the late Ralph Waldo Emerson Hilton and Carrie Rhames Hilton. She attended Manning Training School and graduated in 1944. She then attended South Carolina State College where she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and later a Master of Science Degree in Special Education. Mrs. Hunt joined Ebenezer Baptist Church in Manning, SC at an early age. On April 6, 1947, she was united in marriage to the late James Butler Hunt, Jr. In 1948, along with her husband, Mrs. Hunt joined Mount Pisgah Baptist Church in Orangeburg under the pastorate of the late Reverend J.D. Rhodes. An educator for over 25 years, Mrs. Hunt taught at St. John School in Cameron, SC and at N.C. Nix Elementary School in Orangeburg. As a devoted Special Education teacher, she spent many hours on weekends visiting the families of her special needs students to show them how to help their children. She was a Girl Scout leader; a basketball coach; neonatal unit hospital volunteer; Whittaker Concerned Citizens Organization; Whittaker Crime Watch Organization; Everblooming Flowers (Garden Club); and chartered member of Bridge-A-Dears Club; a member of the Mt. Pisgah Sunday School Class 8, member of Ward 4, a Deaconess, Floral Club member, and a member of the Senior Missionary. Mrs. Hunt leaves to cherish her memory one brother, Francis Hilton (Daisy) of Manning, SC; one brother-in-law, William P. Harrison of Sumter, SC; two sisters-in law: Almeda Rippy and Mary Ruth Byuarm of Charlotte; two daughters: Dr. Marilyn Hunt Lewis-Alim of Huntsville, Alabama and Mrs. Deborah Hunt Woods (Kenneth); eight grandchildren: Hediyah Al-Amin Bullen (Tristan) of DuBai, U.A.E., Maisha El-Amin Booker of Huntsville, AL, Dr. Khalilah Lewis Brown (Booker) of Springville, AL, Kenan Hunt Woods (Vera) of Atlanta, GA, Hassan Sharif Lewis (Tedra) of Ellenwood, GA, Jameel Aquil Lewis of Huntsville, AL, Danika Joy Woods of Atlanta, GA, and Kristen Marlena Woods of Atlanta, GA. She leaves seven great-grandchildren: Imani Aisha Lewis, Zainab Sahar Ali, Usama Akil Ali, Zahra Aaliyah Booker, Nia Peyton Brown, Amira Sanaa Lewis, and Adam Owais Tristan Bullen; her Godson, Marshall Evans; a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Mrs. Hunt was loved and admired by many friends for her perpetual and infectious smile, her love of laughter, and her peaceful spirit. She made friends wherever she went. She was happy and contented in her last years at Morningside Assisted Living in Orangeburg, and at Northlake Assisted Living in Tucker, Ga. She attended Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta and was grateful to be under Cascade's watchful and devoted care during the last year of her life.
