Funeral services for the late Mr. Leon Hammonds will be held on Monday, July 9, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at Shrub Branch Missionary Baptist Church located in Blackville, South Carolina. Interment services will follow immediately at the church cemetery. Rev. McKinley Neal will officate. Viewing for the public will be held on Sunday at the funeral home between the hours of 1:00-8:00. Mr. Leon Hammonds was born February 24, 1940 in Barnwell County, South Carolina to the late Alberta P. Hammonds and Quincy Hammonds. He departed this life on July 3, 2012 at The Medical College of Georgia in Augusta, Georgia. Mr. Leon Hammonds worked for 25 years until his health caused him to retire in 2001 from the City of New York. Preceding him in death were: two sisters, Dorothy H. Moody and Beatrice Hammonds; five brothers, Soloman Hammonds, Richard Hammonds,Robert Lee Hammonds, Franklin Hammonds and Charlie Hammonds; and one sister-in-law, Havanna Hammonds. He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife of 37 years, Alice F. Hammonds; four adopted children, Frenchie Smalls, Bobby (Georgia) Gardener, Harry Calhoun and Kizzy (Davon) Joyner; one sister, Elnora (Cleveland) Williams; one brother, Joseph Hammonds; two sisters-in-law, Lizzie Hammonds and Gloria Hammonds; caregivers and friends, Zelma Odom, Meka Clark and Vernell Moye. Leon will be missed by a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
