Funeral services for the late Ms. Norma Jean Price will be held on Friday, March 15, 2013 at 1:00 pm at New Mt. Zion Baptist Church located in Orangeburg, SC. Ms. Price will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Reverend Jerome Anderson will preside. Interment services will follow immediately at Sunnyside Cemetery located in Orangeburg, SC. Viewing for the public will be held on Thursday from 10:00 am- 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Norma Jean Price embraced eternal life after an extended illness on Sunday, March 10, 2013, at the home of her daughter and son-in-law in Orangeburg, SC. Ms. Price, the eldest of five siblings, is a native of Birmingham, AL, born to Charles E. Price, Sr. and Marietta Price-Mitchell, who both preceded her in death. Ms. Price was a product of the then-segregated public schools of Birmingham, AL where she graduated from A.H. Parker High School. She also attended Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical College and graduated from Booker T. Washington School of Business. Ms. Price retired from the U.S. Social Security Administration after thirty-three years of service and was among the first African-Americans to integrate the agency. She was formerly married to William Bryant. Later, she was joined in holy matrimony to Bennie W. Hurst. Ms. Price was a devoted Christian and was honored for more than fifty years of service to her beloved church home, the historic Sixth Avenue Baptist Church in Birmingham, AL. Due to her declining health, she relocated to Orangeburg, SC in 2007. Upon relocation, she developed a profound fondness for New Mt. Zion Baptist Church and became a member. She was resolute and steadfast in attending church service for as long as her health permitted. Her life was concentrated in a deep love for God, her children and family. She was known to be a self-sacrificing and nurturing mother, grandmother, daughter and sister. Jean will be most deeply missed by her survivors: her loving step-mother, Beatrice M. Price, Birmingham, AL; her devoted daughters, Angela D. Terry (Anthony), Orangeburg, SC; Mannye E. Franklin (Preston), Jacksonville, FL; her faithful son, Bennie S. Hurst (Frederica), Birmingham, AL; her sister, Charlotte M. Price, Birmingham, AL; her stepsister, Dr. Gill Robinson Hickman, Richmond, VA; two brothers: Reverend Charles E. Price, Jr. (Betty), Houston, TX; Reverend Michael Price (Anita), Atlanta, GA: five grandchildren: Ramon Charles Otey, Birmingham, AL; Preston Franklin, II, Jacksonville, FL; Eryn Jeanae Franklin, Jacksonville, FL; Daytjuan S. Pebeahsy, Quapaw, OK; Esa Anthony Terry, Orangeburg, SC; four great grandchildren: La Nyhia Janae Franklin, Jacksonville, FL; Ramiyah and Kavian Otey, Birmingham, AL and Aaliyah Pebeahsy, Quapaw, OK and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. The family is exceedingly grateful for the years of complete devotion and compassionate care provided by Ms. Flossie Shivers Brown. Ms. Raquel Thomas, Senior Companion, is deserving of the warmest expressions of gratitude for her volunteer services as caregiver, counselor and friend.
