Mrs. Ruth Smith Ivey Jones, the daughter of the late Susie DeWitt Smith and Moses Smith, was born on May 7, 1921 in Mullins, South Carolina. God called her home on August 6, 2011, at her residence. After an early childhood in South Carolina, she left the south and settled in Brooklyn, New York. She attended Apex Beauty School where she became a licensed beautician for over 30 years. She later went on to sell real estate. In her later years, she became a caregiver for mentally challenged adults both in New York and South Carolina. She married the late Leon Howard Ivey in 1959, and the Lord blessed them with three daughters. She joined St. Paul Disciples of Christ Church in Brooklyn, New York, where she was a faithful member and president of the Gospel Chorus. Mother Ruth, as she was affectionately known, touched the lives of many, devoting her life to helping others regardless of their status in life. After leaving Brooklyn, New York, Mother Ruth settled in Blackville, South Carolina, with her second husband, Hugh L. Jones. She visited many churches before joining Bethany Missionary Baptist Church where she was welcomed with the warm Spirit of the Lord. She truly loved her pastor and her church family. Until God called her home, she was the oldest active member of Bethany Missionary Baptist Church. After a long and beautiful life, Mother Ruth joined the whispering winds and silent stars. She leaves to rejoice in having known and loved her: her husband, Hugh Jones of Blackville, SC; three daughters, Gloria (Wayne) Johnson of Smiths, AL, Shari (Tyrone) Mosley of Blackville, SC and Dorothy Ward of Birmingham, AL, and grandson she helped raise, Kenyatta Stackhouse of Charlotte, NC; a devoted brother-in-law, Arthur (Ruth) Ivey of Wesley Hills, NY and Delois Johnson of Norfolk, VA; stepchildren, William (Jeanie) Brown of North Augusta, SC, Sharon Brown, Amy (Supreme) Taylor, James Jones, Stephen Jones, all of Brooklyn, NY; four sister-in-laws, Fannie Mae of St. Louis, MO, Louise Harper of Stafford Place, VA, Mattie Ann Payton, Hazel Duncan, Mary Phillips and Ada Carr all of Greenville, NC; seventeen grandchildren; fifteen great-grandchildren; and other relatives, friends and two special angels, Jacob and Shirley. A special thanks is extended to Trinity Healthcare of Aiken, South Carolina. Viewing for the public will be held on Friday between the hours of 3:00 pm and 8:00 pm at the funeral home.
