Mary Thomas **The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Mrs. Twilda D. Bennett was born on April 9, 1927 , in Oxford, North Carolina to the late Julian Lee, Sr. and Facion Hicks Lee. Twilda was educated in the Oxford, North Carolina at Mary Potter School. She earned a Bachelors of Arts of Education from North Carolina Central University, in Durham, North Carolina. Twilda was a member of Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. She was employed by the Charleston County School District for thirty years, where she was an educator at Lang High School, Von Kollwitz Middle School and Moultrie Middle School. Her longtime career of teaching was spent nurturing and caring for her students. Twilda was married to the late Theodore Mitchell Bennett. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Theodore Oliver Mack and a brother, Julian Lee, Jr. Cherishing Twilda's precious memories are her loving daughter, Theodora M. (Ernest) Byrd of Columbia, SC; a grandson, Ernest "Trey" Byrd of Columbia, SC; a brother, Earl Lee of Norwalk, Connecticut; brothers-in-law, Thomas Bennett of St. Albans, New York and Oscar (Bettina) Bennett of Evansville, Indiana; adopted grandsons, Joseph R. O'Neil, Roderick Lee, William L. Pauling, Jr., Rayson Thomas all of Columbia, SC and Darius Henson of Cape May, New Jersey; and a host of other loving nieces and nephews. Public viewing will be held on Monday, December 19, 2011 at Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ, 124 Spring Street, Charleston, SC from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Friends may call at the residence of her daughter, Theodora (Dorie) and Ernest Byrd, Jr., 80 Hamptonwood Way, Columbia, SC and at the funeral home.
