Mrs. Virginia Butler was born on December 31, 1921 to the late Mr. Clyde and Polly Middleton in Bamberg, SC. She departed this earthly life on Monday, February 17, 2014 at Colleton County Medical Center in Walterboro, SC. At an early age, Mrs. Butler accepted Christ and was baptized at St. John Baptist Church in Bamberg, SC. She served in many capacities as The Mother of St. John Baptist Church, Sunday school teacher and secretary. She also was a member of the Bamberg Mass Choir, The National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and Bamberg Improvement Association. Mrs. Butler was affectionately known as the lady who sang, "If You Are Talking About Jesus- He's a Friend of Mine". She was educated in the public schools in Bamberg. She was employed with the late Mr. Waddy (Elizabeth) Thompson for over forty years, rearing their children Ann and Waddy Thompson as her own. Mrs. Butler was united in holy matrimony to the late Deacon Cleveland Butler. Preceding her in death are three siblings and two adopted. Cherishing her precious memories are: devoted nieces, Polly Ann McGill, Mary A. Broxton, Mary Sennie Robinson all of Bamberg, SC, Virginia (Charles) Grimes of Louisburg, NC and Sheldonia Hubbard of Brooklyn, NY; nephews, Willie Broxton of Bamberg, SC, Rev. Manzie Broxton of Sandersville, GA, Jimmy "Bubba" Robinson of Hempstead, NY, Sinclair McGill; God children, Christian Capers of SC and Rev. Dr. Travien Capers of Columbia, SC; and a host of other loving relatives and friends. Viewing for the public will be held on Saturday from 10:00 am-8:00 pm at the funeral home.
